We at Vets Helping Heroes and Charlie Morecraft’s team want to wish you a happy, healthy, peaceful and fulfilling Holiday Season!

Your gift from last year directly produced over 39 dogs for disabled Veterans, including two “Seeing Eye” Guide Dogs for Blind Veterans, and 37 other Service Dogs. Each dog has been specially trained for the unique needs of disabled Veterans who have loss of vision, loss of hearing, balance, mobility issues, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI).  Your gift has gone even further by again using “challenge grants” as we did the year before that increased donations by over half a million dollars this last year again!

As you all know from our Obituary Letter to you dated January 17, 2018, our founder, Irwin Stovroff passed away on January 16^th of this year at the age of 95.  His Service Dog, Cash was right by his side.  We then lost Irwin’s Service Dog, Cash, just a few months later, but Irwin’s Mission has not died.  The Board is determined to carry on with Irwin’s Mission and make Vets Helping Heroes even more of a success and raise even more funds to help even more disabled Veterans in need of a Guide Dog or Service Dog.  

We have re-organized with a new President, Melvin Pollack, Lt.Col., U.S. Air Force, Retired, (Ex-POW Vietnam), and moved our office and changed our telephone number to:  980 North Federal Highway, Suite 110, Boca Raton, FL  33432  Telephone Number: 561-927-VETS (8387).  We have a brand new website at:  www.vetshelpingheroes.org.

Unfortunately, the statistics of Suicide among our Veterans has increased.  We are losing over 24 Veterans each day to suicide.    We know that properly-trained Guide Dogs and Service Dogs do save Veterans having suicidal thoughts as a result of the depression from Blindness, PTSD and TBI.  These Service Dogs perform tasks which helps the Veteran attain safety and independence again.  For many veterans, life after partnering with a Service Dog is dramatically different than life before. They enjoy hobbies and activities they stopped participating in. They go out for dinner with family and friends without having anxiety attacks. Life improves and becomes fun again with the help of their Service Dog. They merge back into society.

If VETS HELPING HEROES HELPS only ONE of those 24 a day each year, (that would be 365 properly-trained, Certified Guide Dogs and Service Dogs) we would need a total of $14,600,000.00 per year to cover the cost.  That $14,600,000.00 total only covers one (1) Veteran per day.  THE NEED IS GREATER THAN EVER!

I also have come to realize over the years that we are not alone on this planet we call our home. We share our world with the many creatures both big and small and it is our charge to respect and honor all life. When I first heard about Rosie the Elephant I was intrigued and interested enough in her story to personally get involved to support the project. A project to create a safe environment for her where she can live out the rest of her days safely and with care.

After meeting Rosie in person and getting to know her, I have to admit I fell in love and now I am inspired to do even more to help. Vets Helping Heroes mission is to provide the financial support for assistance dogs trained by professionals for veterans who have served honorably and active duty military personnel injured during service in the U.S. Armed Forces. Assistance dogs provide independence and service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In addition, they are a source of much needed enjoyment as beloved “family members” – running with children, providing comfort for spouses, and the security of knowing that they can even provide such services as predicting an oncoming seizure.

VETS HELPING HEROES is a charity founded by WWII Veteran and POW, Irwin Stovroff. After his incredible wartime experiences, Irwin finished his education, married, started a family and had a successful career in the furniture industry. When he retired at age 75, he began volunteering at the local Veterans Administration Medical Center helping to get Vets all of the benefits to which they were entitled. When he discovered that the Veterans Administration did not get government funds to provide service dogs of any kind, and that all dogs were funded by private donations, he started this charity with the single goal of purchasing quality-trained dogs for wounded Vets who needed them.

Now 93, Irwin continues to work tirelessly. His life has been the subject of an award-winning independent film, The Gift of Life; and the basis for a fictionalized treatment in book form, “An Extraordinary Life – Gone to the Dogs”. He has been featured on “The Sean Hannity Show”, “The Bonnie Hunt Show” and “Inside Edition” among many television spots. Irwin tells his story to everyone who will listen, urging anyone who can to give money so that we can try to stem the tide of wounded Vets who are suffering from both physical and emotional injuries, including Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Assisted by a Board of nine other professionals, many of whom are retired military (one of whom, Mel Pollack, spent six years as a Prisoner Of War in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton”), Irwin is leading the battle to make everyone aware that our Vets are facing a crisis. We are losing 22 Vets a day to suicide alone.

Vets Helping Heroes has raised over $4.5 Million during its short existence, and has used that money to investigate and approve multiple dog-training facilities which Vets Helping Heroes has sponsored to place over 125 dogs with Vets in need.

The VA has spent lots of money “studying” whether service dogs can assist Vets with PTSD. While the VA is studying, Vets Helping Heroes already knows that dogs can, and do, help save lives and give fulfilment and independence to Vets with PTSD and other injuries. We are moving full speed ahead to try to make sure that every Vet who can benefit from one can receive a properly-trained service dog appropriate to his or her needs. We hope you can help.

Children of the World

A network of people dedicated to all children experiencing the magic of life; a world in which every child is loved, honored protected and nurtured; where children express themselves fully and take pride in their lives. One example of their work is Casa Speranta – House of Hope in Constanta, Romania. Romania has the largest population of pediatric AIDS in Europe – 1600 children with AIDS live in Romania. Casa Speranta cares for approximately twenty-five abandoned HIV-infected children who range in age from infancy to nine years old. There is a Romanian “mother” for every five children. These children are loved, nurtured, fed, schooled and given as close to a normal life as possible.

Children’s Defense Fund

The premiere children’s advocacy organization committed to ensuring that “no child is left behind.” Their work focuses on ending violence against children and health issues.

Save the Children

An amazing international organization that improves health conditions for kids in developing countries (with a specific focus on AIDS education), improves educational access to kids (last year helped close to 400,000 children and adults in 23 nations by building schools and teaching people to read and write), and supports mentoring programs for disadvantaged kids in the U.S.

Habitat for Humanity – It’s not a “Hand Out” it’s a “Hand Up!”

Charlie Morecraft has built a Habitat for Humanity House in Delray Beach, Florida. The Habitat Humanity Program’s intentions are 1) to remove families from sub-standard housing 2) to improve communities by building new homes, 3) to help people become motivated, productive citizens.

Charlie Morecraft has built a school in Uganda in the village of Kimanto. The school is called the Charles and Janet Morecraft Academy. As stated by a member of the Parliament of Uganda, “Life in Kimanto will never be the same. This is the first modern primary school in the village.”

Charlie Morecraft has donated $10,000.00 to the USA fund to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees to aid in the plight of the woman and children now suffering in deplorable conditions on the borders of Afghanistan.

Charlie Morecraft’s Office is an organization of people committed to the improvement of the quality of life for people throughout the world.
